Soffit, fascia, and eaves explained

The eave is the roof overhang. The soffit is the underside of that overhang. The fascia is the vertical board or trim along the roof edge where gutters often attach. Together they protect the roof edge, help finish the exterior, and influence how water and air move around the home.

Why soffit ventilation matters

Vented soffit panels can help intake air move into the attic when paired with proper exhaust ventilation. Blocked soffit vents, insulation pushed into the eave, or painted-over vent openings can contribute to heat and moisture buildup in the attic.

When soffit damage is related to roofing or gutters

Soffit stains, rot, pest entry, sagging panels, and peeling paint may come from roof edge leaks, missing drip edge, clogged gutters, loose gutters, damaged fascia, or poor attic ventilation. The visible soffit issue is often only the symptom.
